The Film
The film revolves around a lady Radha(Nargis) who is married in a very poor peasant family. She is married to Rajkumar. They work hard all the day only to produce enough crop to feed their small family and pay the loans of their crook moneylender Sukhilala. situation takes U turn now. They lost every thing. In a horrible incident when her husbant was trying to remove a big boulder from their field, tragedy strikes and he looses both his hands, leaving him maimed and unable to do any work.Feeling himself as a burden on the family Rajkumar left house and disappears forever. Radha left with no option, works hard to raise her children and earn a livelihood, under the continuous threat of starvation and sexual exploitation from the moneylender Sukhilala. She spends her live in this critical situation. Years after year passes and Radha's two sons grows up and become Birju and Ramu. Ramu is a smart, hardworking and respected farmer of the vilage, whereas Birju is an indisciplined, hot blood and rebel boy and always ready to take revenge on Sukhilala.
Nargis is caught between two sons. Birju's act starts going very immoral and indescent way. Finally situation gets so horrible that Nargis had to shoot her Birju in order to save the dignity and honour of the village. And proved herself as Mother India.
My Review
In my view Mother India is not just a movie. Its a bollywood epic depicting the plight of Indian farmers family suffering under poverty, cruel traditions and enequality in our society. It is a real portrayal of a village lady of who works hard day and night to feed her family under the continual pressure from her patriarch society and a scrouplous and cruel moneylender who wants to gain undue monetary and sexual advances towards her.
There are other movies also with the same theme and background but what makes Mother India different from others is its resemblance to typical Indian situation and Indian society. And above all, There is Nargis --- the heart and soul of Mother India. Indeed, there would not have been a Mother India without Nargis the legend.
